Religious Trauma Recovery

I offer secular counseling for people experiencing questions around religious belief, loss of faith, or searching for sense of meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. I help those who are looking to heal from religious trauma, looking to rebuild their sense of self, and help create a new path from this new identity. I also strive to create a space for those who are questioning aspects of their beliefs that no longer feel true, but still wish to maintain their spiritual and religious traditions. I also provide services for non-religious people who are struggling to find personal meaning amidst the chaos of modern life. These services are offered with the assumption that I do not possess the ultimate answers, nor do I come from a place of authority. Rather, my training and knowledge in mental health counseling are tools to help guide you in recognizing your own views and beliefs with greater clarity.

For many people, religion and spirituality are a healthy and vital part of their lives. But in some situations, they can also create an incredible amount of stress. Sometimes the process of questioning one’s beliefs alone can result in anxiety, despair, and depression. For people in these situations, their religious leaders and communities might not feel like a safe place to explore these questions. For this reason, I have created a confidential space for you to heal and explore what comes next for you, whether you remain in your faith tradition, or find a new path that fits you better.

Harm Reduction

With many years of experience in outpatient addictions treatment, I have tailored an approach to meet the needs of people not currently addressed in most traditional treatment programs. Harm reduction is about meeting you where you’re at with regards to your substance use. You may not be ready to fully abstain from substances you currently use, or you may want to make changes with one, while continuing to use another. I offer both individual counseling and groups where you get to define your goals, and you are welcome to change them at any time you choose. My role is to help you identify risks while providing support and tools that have been shown to help people make the changes they want in their life.

Integration Counseling

As much current research shows, there are a number of new and traditional substances that can be powerful tools in the right context. While I am not yet offering services during a client’s psychedelic experience, I believe in harm reduction, and value education, preparation, planning, and processing of these experiences. As this is a cutting edge area of research, training, and policy, these services may expand as the law changes.

For now, I offer integration counseling for people who have utilized or plan to use these substances. My approach recognizes personal freedom and aims to foster therapeutic benefits, while also mitigating potential risks. My experience in addictions counseling adds a unique skill set to these services, both in identifying the potential pitfalls of substance use (for example, as a means of avoidance rather than healing), and as a way of exploring ways to make changes with substance use that you see as having a negative impact on your life.
